Good Morning Everyone! I hope your Sunday is going just great! :-)
Ok, so I am sure by now thanks to the power of social media lol a lot of you have seen the video.
Now my first reaction was along the lines of "how the heck could they just dog us like that?" and "Did they only just focus on the 'crappy' parts of Nassau?" Then I watched it a couple more times to see if my feelings would change. It didn't.
I have been on Facebook and visited the various Bahamian pages that shared the video and of course looked at the comments. Views about the video were mixed. Comments ranged from the extremely insulted to the meh whatever screw them to the well they are right type of thing.
For me I am kind of getting the vibe of a parody video even though it did tick me off that they chose the spots where not much of anything really goes on and they (if I am not mistaken) do work on a cruise ship sooo I am not sure where they were going with it lol ... but nonetheless that's how they see it just like many of others probably do. Some natives and tourists do sometimes get disappointed when venturing to Nassau depending on what's the purpose and where they end up ... experiences differ. For example for complete isolation and quiet and just a true island getaway Nassau is not for you and I would recommend one of our other family islands. Now, if you came for hard partying, business, wanting a mixture of city and island life well Nassau is for you! :-)
As I was looking at the comments on the video this comment stuck out for me (I've heard this complaint for many years and it irks me too):
"The only thing they were missing was all the dirt flying in your face as you tried to walk down the nasty streets of Nassau. Oh and the creepy guys following you around saying taxi taxi, taxi, free jewelry...only $5 donation, hair braiding, hair braiding, hey lady, hey lady, hair braiding.......omg the worst place ever."

Now, as Bahamians we ALLLLLLL know what downtown Nassau is like and we all have our different issues with what goes on around that area and how it should be handled. That comment is what my pet peeve is about downtown Nassau and no one can deny that doesn't go on or what she is saying is not so. I mean for decades the downtown area has not been what it once was. Sadly things have changed drastically with Downtown Nassau and we really cannot fault the video too much ... it is what it is. I will also say though that this video is not reflective of the WHOLE of Nassau either. We have our issues just like every other country in this world and no country is excluded from what we are dealing with either.
HOWEVER, I would like to point out to any potential visitors that may come across my blog and or this video or heck any other like video ... NASSAU is NOT THE WHOLE BAHAMAS. :-) It is no excuse though of the condition of Nassau or the downtown area but this is just one island. We have an abundance of islands you can visit, fly over, dip and fall back on lol ... but no Nassau is just one island.
To my fellow Bahamians ... in order for "negative" vids, press or any type of media scrutiny that we do not feel show us in a positive light to be on a minimum we need to do better point blank and period. Stop littering, stop the graffiti on our walls and our Government needs to get their act together as well with what the heck they're going to do with the Downtown area.
With all that being said ... Do not let this get you upset :-) Come on ... smile and let's just do better Bahamas. :-)
NOW WITH ALL THAT BEING SAID .... WE STILL GOT IT GOING ON! LOL
