Today marks 6 years since my mother passed.
Love and appreciate your family members while they are alive.
On August 8th 1956 Manasseh & Virginia Deveaux gave birth to their fourth child; a baby girl whom they named Linda Elizabeth.
As a child Linda was not one to be found in the kitchen or into the household duties as the rest of her siblings. She was the one whom was always in her room reading or very much into her scholastics. She always had a passion and flair for Language, Literature and the Arts which would later on be the area of her expertise.
One day while visiting a family friend’s household (Maud & Charles Carey) through Montrose Avenue, she was introduced to a young man from Freeport named Lawrence Oliver Russell. The two became smitten with each other and quickly became close friends. That friendship turned into much more than they bargained for and they fell in love. On September 11th 1976 they exchanged vows and became husband and wife. From that day forth they were like two peas in a pod. As Lawrence embarked on his musical career in various bands and casino shows, Linda would be right beside him for every performance and supporting him on the sidelines. Within this union they were able to pull off the best performance ever; which was on held on August 23rd 1977 as Linda gave birth to a daughter whom they named Lecia Lynette. That would prove to be their only and last performance of this kind. Lecia was able to bring forth one grandchild - Justin Brendan Finley - whom was the apple of her eye. They were very close and Justin knew how to work his grandmother’s emotions to get what he wanted. She would say “Justin Brendan are you checking on me?” and he would say “Yes, Grammy Linda!”
Linda’s professional teaching career started at Claridge Primary School as a Fourth Grade Generalist in 1975-1976. She then went on to the S. C. McPherson Secondary School as Language Arts Teacher Grades 7-12 and the Language Arts Head of Department from 1976-1992. She decided to spread her wings further to The College of The Bahamas where she was an Assistant Professor in the School of Education from 1992 until her demise. She was primary education certified from The Bahamas Teacher Training College (Nassau Campus) and held a Master of Science for Teachers of English degree from the University of New Hampshire, Durham, New Hampshire.
New Hampshire was her home away from home in which she felt most comfortable while furthering her education. She took summer courses throughout the years in order to fulfil her goals both personally and professionally and of course her husband went along with her as a support system. It was during this past summer where Linda went to New Hampshire to engage in a summer course for 4 weeks that she took ill. It was there that Lawrence noticed signs that she was not doing well, however, Linda was determined to finish the course and return home with a goal completed on her list. Linda did indeed complete her course and pass with flying colours and she was pleased. However, upon her arrival back home she began to again not feel well. Upon doctor’s advice and after a brief stay in hospital she was diagnosed with Hemochromatosis or simply “Iron Overload”. Treatment began and things looked positive and despite her still being slightly weak Linda expressed a desire to go back to work and got permission from her doctor to do so.
On October 13th, 2009 Linda got ready to go to work as she so desired however, she started feeling weak and decided not to go in as previously discussed. She then made and appointment to see her doctor whom admitted her for observation and tests to find out what was the cause.
On October 15th, 2009 at 9:00am Lawrence and Lecia went to visit Linda on the way down to work when they were informed that she was found unresponsive and she may have suffered a stroke and that they would do a cat scan on her brain and give the results later on that afternoon. Her husband and daughter went into the room to see her and they were able to silently and privately see her alive for the last time. At 10:10am Linda’s spiritual self left her earthly body to be with her Lord and Saviour in heaven. She is no longer suffering or in pain, she is at peace and awaiting that day where we will all be together once again.
